Progeny

This evening, while at Perkins with [info]ivanaduboise and [info]minnesattva, I decided upon the names of my children: Vic and Sue ... that's right, Victorious Awesome Xavier and Superfluous Amazing Xavier.1

For some reason, adjectives, especially those with three or four syllables, sound good as names to me. I'm not entirely surprised, as I don't much care for people only choosing names—like George, Cheryl, and Jim-Bob—that would be approved by an important-sounding focus group like Panel for the Allocation of Names to Irrelevant Children, or the American Council of Name Examination. I think that full names should be interesting and unique. There's really no downside, because anyone can assume a boring nickname for casual use, if they so choose.

Maybe it's just that I'm disappointed that my mom wouldn't let my dad name me Melchizedek.

1 Do note that these children are entirely hypothetical.

Superfluous will have a terrible inferiority complex, and resent Victorious. Maybe "Superlative" instead? Just to cut down on the nascent serial-killer vibe, you understand.

What makes you think that I'm not encouraging the serial-killer vibe? We do have a murder deficit, you know. ;-)

As the female present, I made some protests along these lines--clearly, making the boy Victorious and the girl Superfluous is setting yourself up for trouble. But when he realized this, [info]comradexavier only giggled (and cackled) more, so I guess all that's left is to hope he doesn't have any kids. :-)

Melchizedek is also the name of a rat in the book "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I shall henceforth think of you as Melchy.
